Gateway Llamas!

Your erstwhile Friends board members hiked a portion of the planned Gateway Trail in Scandia on Saturday. What a beautiful route through our city!

The highlight of that segment will be the section adjoining the llama farm on Oakhill Road. Farm owners Jane and Ann gave us a guided tour including an up-close visit with the animals. What fun they are. As one of our members said, "they're just like really big friendly dogs." Accompanying us board members were Bill Buell, a long-time trail supporter who arranged the tour and John Oldendorf, chair of the Gateway Trail Association. Thx Bill, Ann, Jane and John!

Planning and easement acquistion is proceeding well on the part of the trail extending north from O'Brien Park to the Scandia city center. This fall the Friends and the Gateway Trail Assn will host an evening meeting to discuss progress on that portion of the trail and to begin visualizing the part of the trail that will proceed north of Highway 97. Special invitations will be sent to folks living near the planned trail, but all Friends members will be invited too.

The tour also helped us identify bike routes that can hook up with the Gateway. Friends board member Rich Burton is leading that effort. We will be coordinating this with the city council and the parks and rec committee.
